Cord.Knitted.Necklaces.

A few necklaces made from hand knitted cords.

The first was made from the leftover yarn after knitting a pair of socks.  I began french knitting to see how long it would be.  It was very long; so then I crocheted a chain with the cord using my hands instead of a hook.

The second is made from a knitted i-cord (using two double pointed needles).

 To begin you knit a large 'bead' and then again when the cord is long enough to finish.

These were my very first attempts at knitting beads, so I could use a bit more practice but overall am happy with it.

This second necklace I knitted from the pattern Gaucho's Lariat from Domiknitrix by Jennifer Stafford.

Bike-Chain-Maile

Recycled bicycle chain links, stainless steel & aluminium.

It has more of an 'amour' feel to it than my previous designs and I love the way the links have a sense of free flowing yet still manage to retain the 'solid' shape around the neckline.

This is a new design I have put together for the amazing Tracey of Los Parcheros; beautiful handmade jewellery... Worth checking out!I'll be working on some more chain maile soon.

Finger Knitted Necklace [V&A]

I spent today at the V&A Museum volunteering with the Craft Club.

As it is half term we were teaching children of all ages (and some parents) to finger knit.

Here is my effort:

 A rather tasteful orange/purple number I fashioned into a necklace

 Think I could be onto something here...

Mix Make Wear

Blue organic discs hand embroidered onto vivid orange net and smooth canvas backing, with striking yellows to reds.  Ribbon tie fastening in matching yellow and blue. 

 

Made from carrier bags, netting, canvas: all recycled.

Created using crochet, heat proccesses, hand embroidery and sewing.

A collection of materials, a mixture of textures and some fun techniques for this playful statement necklace...

Measuring 12cm x 10cm.  Ribbon ties approx 50cm each.

Gold dimensional necklace made from safety pins - a stylish and functional bit of neck bling! Created by my friend and fellow textile designer Armita Shirazi.

Hand knitted heart, in beautiful shades of maroon, purple and lilac, hanging from a hand sewn bow; created using second hand Parisien lace I personally bought back to London and gave a home, to save it from the fate of a bin. All of this on a luxurious & natural cord, hand knitted from a mixture of hemp & bamboo.

Recycled Bike Valve Necklace

I've just finished making my very first item of jewellery created using recycled presta valves from bicycle inner tubes!

I have been collecting old, punctured inner tubes from for a little while; with the intention of creating a few small bags & wallets from the old rubber.

While that is in the process of occuring; I have been conjuring ideas I could create with the valves from them too.

So, there it is:

My first necklace from recycled inner tube valves!All the valves have been cleaned and then sprayed silver, which has been throughly tested for water proof and rub-proof-ness!
The valves hang from a chunky but lightweight silver chain - look out for it on my website soon & at my market stall at the Backyard Market on Brick Lane on Sundays!

Crochet Carrier Bag Necklaces

Here are a few new necklaces I have made by crocheting old carrier bags. Instead of going on to use my heat treatment on them I have left them in there normal state, which works really well for big neck pieces and statement jewellery.

Orange carrier bags with a sophisticated gold organsa ribbon which makes for a really unusual combination.

The second necklace is made from light pink carrier bags, attached to a lightweight lilac chain.

Going For A Song Jumble - Photos

Some photographic delights of my stall at the April Going for a Song Jumble, held in the Amersham Arms in New Cross.

A rather chilled day... With some rather good ukelele players and some lovely fellow jumblers!

A little sample of my earring collections, made from recycled materials and objects such as carrier bags, ring pulls, bottle tops, bike chains & lego blocks.

... My no. 1 customer of the day! Enjoying her dominoe necklace with anodised blue chain and a couple of bottle top broaches to match!

Fab t-shirts, carbon neutral organic cotton bags & some awesome animal jumpers all screen printed by one man in his kitchen.

There were some fab people at the jumble and some awesome realisation of the wonders of recycling from Rosie Posy, who creates beautiful & unique hand made bags from recycled bras!

One Year On - Photos

This year I was selected to showcase my work as part of the established One Year On section of New Designers.

It was a fantastic compliment to be chosen and not only did I meet some fantastic people but made some brilliant contacts too.

The exhibition was curated by Thorsten Van Elton and a cardboard theme was used throughout both weeks of New Designers to present the products being showcased in One Year On - which looked fantastic! The boxes were re-used afterwards for their intended storage & packaging use too.

The week gave me the opportunity to present some new pieces to the public - including this decorative crochet necklace, made from bin liners and second hand plastic faceted buttons. This design differs from my usual technique as it has not been heat treated, but still has a soft texture.

Here is another new design debuted at O.Y.O. My newest pieces have really been focused on creating a big statement - I like the idea of my creations growing in every sense of the word; it is another common feature of nature.

There were some old favourites back - glad to say that the bees were just as popular as ever!
